From Student To Facilitator: Kyra Lane

Kyra Lane has had quite the journey with Youth Speak Out International. While she’s better known as Ms. K to the students that she teaches in afterschool programs across Palm Beach County, Kyra’s journey with Youth Speak Out started when she was a middle school student herself, sitting in a classroom at Roosevelt Middle School. At the time, she was in love with dance. “Nothing could get my mind off it,” Kyra said. “Until [Mr. King] from Youth Speak Out stepped into my life. That’s when I could see I had a different passion… It was truly inspiring for me, and it made me feel like I could do anything when I started learning about TV production.”

After being introduced to TV production through the Youth Speak Out program, Youth Speak Out Television, Kyra pursued TV production in high school and college, attending the Fort Lauderdale Institute of the Arts. After earning her degree, she found it difficult to get a job in television production and found herself in an office job that didn’t give her a lot of satisfaction.

To Kyra’s surprise, a friend from Middle School was working with Youth Speak Out
International and she reached out to see if Kyra would be interested in teaching students media production.

The rest, as she says, is history. Kyra has been working as a facilitator for Youth Speak Out International for one year, delivering Today’s Digital Citizens curriculum to students in elementary afterschool programs. For her, the most rewarding part of her journey is how she can uplift her students.

“When I was younger… I never realized how much of an impact Youth Speak Out had on me,” Kyra said. “I never saw, truly, the impact and how much it made me love this and how much it taught me and how much it opened my eyes and allowed me step out of the box. I never realized all of this until I started teaching children…. Now I see for myself how impactful Youth Speak Out International’s work is.”

Youth Speak Out International is grateful to have Kyra as a member of our facilitation team. Her journey shows how our curriculum empowers and inspires students every day to use their voice and be the best versions of themselves.
