Talking To Your Children About AI

As families continue to navigate advancing technology, parents may be wondering how to talk to their children about the important topics impacting their lives. The development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed children’s lives, from their education to daily tasks. But many parents and family members are probably wondering– how can I talk to my child about AI when I don’t understand it myself?

Of course, parents never have all the answers. And it doesn’t hurt to take some time and do some research before talking to your child. But this new realm of AI also presents an opportunity for families to learn together. “The worst thing parents can do is forbid their child to use these new systems because they are here to stay,” said Justine Cassell, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University. “Helping their child understand the positives and negatives is far more helpful.”

Families can try interacting with chatbots, giving them different prompts and seeing how they respond. This also provides the opportunity for everyone to talk about how the chatbots make them feel, especially since this AI technology is designed to be friendly and supportive. Children might not understand that an AI chatbot is not their friend– and it is important that they understand that a chatbot is not a person and that they should not share personal information with them.

Lastly, it is helpful for parents to look up school regulations on the use of AI and find out how it is being used in the classroom. As we explored in a recent blog post, AI is present in teaching and learning in both positive and negative ways. But understanding the rules that your school has set and how your child is interacting with this technology can help ensure you give them the most helpful advice.

Parents don’t need to have all the answers. But showing that you’re willing to learn and communicating with your child about what they’re experiencing can help keep them happy and safe.
