5 Ways AI is Transforming the Classroom

Artificial Intelligence (AI) touches countless aspects of our lives. From how we work to how we present ourselves to how we manage and consume information. Even though AI still has plenty of room to grow and expand, here are five ways– positive and negative– that this technology is already transforming the way we learn.

1. Generative AI Makes It Easier For Students to Plagiarize

Software programs like CHATGPT can write essays for students, answer questions on quizzes or tests, and even do students’ homework. In these early days, guidelines have not been established for how to use this technology in the classroom and when it should be restricted. This makes identifying plagiarism a difficult task for teachers, parents, and students.

2. AI Can Automate Administrative Tasks, Giving Teachers More Time With Students

According to a study by McKinsey and Company, AI technology can help teachers reallocate 20 to 30 percent of their time toward activities that support student learning. That means less time working on administrative tasks that lead to burnout and more time building relationships with students.

3. AI Is Not Always Right

AI technology is only advanced as the information and resources that it draws from. Using AI to answer classroom questions or grade assignments could perpetuate biases against certain groups and could spread false information.

4. AI Can Individualize Student Learning

AI can develop lesson plans designed for each individual, allowing students to work at their own pace and focus on the specific areas where they need improvement. It doesn’t replace teachers, but gives them data that can help them work one-on-one with their students and give them the best educational experience.

5. Access to AI Isn’t Always Equitable

AI can provide a lot of improvements in the classroom, but not everyone has equal access to new technology. While this technology may close the gap between rich and poor schools, it also has the potential to widen the gap– especially if teachers in poorer schools are being replaced by AI, while students in richer schools are getting a blend of AI and human-powered education.
