Summer is right around the corner, and everyone is looking forward to a much-needed break. Adults and children alike have been spending a lot of time in front of screens, which makes it even more important to put down the devices and get some fresh air. Last month, we talked about the significance of getting outside while still staying safe. This month, we have a list of activities that you can consider doing with your family in a safe, outdoor environment.
- Visit the park. Taking a trip to the local park is a great way to get outside. When you visit the park, there are lots of activities to choose from: going for a walk, playing a game, laying out in the grass, looking for different animals and plants. The park is also an open space where it is easy to socially distance yourself from others.
- Go for a hike. South Florida has an abundance of beautiful natural areas. Pick a hiking trail that fits the needs of the whole family and immerse yourself in the wilderness. You might be able to spot some interesting plants, animals, and other natural sites. And once again, a hike is an easy place to keep your distance from others.
- Plant a garden. This is an activity that you can do right in your backyard! The process of growing things– whether it’s just one flower or a whole garden– is fun and rewarding. It’s also a great opportunity to teach your children about things like responsibility, team work, and taking care of the natural world.
- Host a picnic. Who doesn’t love a good picnic? There are so many places you can do this activity: at the beach, at the park, or right in your own backyard! This creates an opportunity for the family to get some fresh air and spend time together while enjoying a meal. You can even safely invite friends or family, as long as the adults are fully vaccinated.
- Go to the beach. This is a classic summer activity and another great way to connect to nature. There’s so much to do at the beach: going for a swim, relaxing in your beach chairs, and looking for seashells are just a few examples. A trip to the beach is another awesome opportunity to teach your children about local animals and plants and what it takes to care for these natural spaces. The beach is also an easy place to socially distance.
Regardless of what you decide to do, we hope that you will take some time this summer to put down the devices, stay safe, and get outside.
