If hours of television have been melting your brain, this activity can help you get it running again. You’ll take the famous characters and celebrities you’ve seen in videos and make them a part of a guessing game. During each round of the game, one person will know the name or identity of the character, and the other person has to guess who it is by asking “yes” or “no” questions. How many questions do you have to ask before you can figure it out? Do you think you’d be good at this game? Some critical thinking skills are needed, but you have to have an open mind too, because sometimes the answer is not what you first expect!
Begin by choosing the appropriate grade level for the child or children in your family:
What You Will Need
- Small pieces of paper
- A pen
- At least three family members
Activity
- Each older family member (age 12 or older) will write the names of famous characters or celebrities on small pieces of paper and fold them in half (one name per page). Be sure to think of characters or celebrities your children know. You can write down as many names as you like, but try to think of at least one name for every person who is participating.
- Taking turns, each person will hand their folded paper to another family member and ask them to hold it their hand so no one can see what is written on it.
- The person holding the paper will ask questions about the famous character or celebrity. The questions should be “Yes” or “No” questions. For example, “Does the person have red hair?” is a yes/no question, but “What color is their hair?” is not. The goal is to discover the identity of the character or celebrity.
- All family members are allowed to give advice to the person asking the questions.
- The person holding the paper will try to guess the name of the character or celerity.
- Each person gets a maximum of three attempts to guess the name.

- How did you decide what questions to ask?
- Are some questions better than others? What kinds of questions are most helpful?
- Was it hard to guess the name? Why or why not?

- What kinds of questions most helped you discover the answer? Questions about how the person looks (physical features like hair color or height), questions about what the person does (their occupation or hobbies), or questions about their likes or dislikes? What other kinds of questions did you ask?
- Was the answer unexpected? If so, how did you guess correctly, or what would have helped you figure it out?
