Debunking Common AI Myths

With AI becoming an increasingly important part of our national and international conversations across multiple industries, it is important for everyone– especially young people– to understand the common misconceptions around AI. Here are a few of the common beliefs that don’t tell the whole story:

1. AI Is Going To Eliminate Jobs

There is a perception that artificial intelligence (AI) is going to replace human workers. While it is true that AI is transforming the workplace, the goal of AI is to replace the menial tasks that workers do so that they can focus on the elements of their jobs that require creativity and critical thinking.

2. AI Is Truthful and Unbiased

It is common for people to think that because AI is part of a machine, it must be unbiased. But AI programs are designed by humans, and often import the biases that their creators hold. Additionally, AI programs are still being developed and don’t always generate the correct answers to questions. It is a goal of the industry to make their models more accurate and less biased, but this will take time.

3. AI Doesn’t Impact Normal People

There is a perception of AI as being in the realm of tech developers in Silicon Valley. But AI is already impacting many areas of our lives, including how we conduct research, how we use social media, how we consume news, how we learn, and more. That’s why it is critically important that people understand how AI works, the good and the bad.

At Youth Speak Out International, we’re helping educate the next generation on AI and digital citizenship in our Today’s Digital Citizens program so that our young people will be prepared to face the world today and tomorrow. Thanks to Prime Time Palm Beach County for supporting our work!
