This summer, students in Youth Speak Out International’s Today’s Digital Citizens program had the opportunity to collaborate with senior citizens. At Acts of Kindness summer camp, students in the 3rd-5th grade class heard from a local senior citizen about how technology impacts her life and her relationships with her grandchildren. She also helped students work on their projects, assisting with the creation of storyboards for each group’s Public Service Announcement (PSA).
This opportunity to collaborate across multiple generations is critical to our communities. It gives children a chance to hear another perspective that they might not consider. It also allows older people to listen and see what technology means to our youth. It allows for conversation and the free flow of ideas. It creates connections.
The changing digital landscape doesn’t just impact young people. Technology impacts every area of our lives; from healthcare to education to how we do our jobs. Everyone is vulnerable to challenges like cyberbullying, media addiction, and protecting private information. But those problems also look different for every person. We are honored to provide a space where those experiences can be explored; not just for young people, but for adults as well.
With the summer season coming to a close, our team at Youth Speak Out International is looking forward to returning to the classroom this fall. Thanks to Prime Time Palm Beach County for continuing to support our work and helping us empower the next generation of digital citizens.
